What is FIA?
• FIA stands for Federal Investigation Agency of Pakistan(اردو نام: وفاقی محتسب ادارہ).
• It was established in 1975 under the FIA Act, 1974.
• Its main objective is to deal with smuggling, narcotics, currency offenses, and foreigners-related laws.
• It also deals with immigration and passport offenses and crimes that have inter-provincial connections.
Historical Background of FIA:
• A “Special Police Establishment (SPE)” was formed in 1942 during World War II to investigate corruption in the Supplies and Procurement Department of the Government of India.
• After independence of Pakistan, it was named “Pakistan Special Police Establishment (PSPE)”.
• In 1972, a report on Police Reforms recommended the establishment of a Federal Police Organization to deal with various criminal offenses.
• The FIA Act, 1974 (Act-VIII of 1975) was promulgated on 13-01-1975, bringing “Federal Investigation Agency (FIA)” into existence.
